About the Event

Curiae Virides Presents: A Screening of The Tribunal

Join us for a special screening of The Tribunal, a powerful film that sheds light on the role of courts and law in addressing environmental disputes. This compelling documentary created in cooperation with the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, explores the intersections of human rights, environmental justice, and legal accountability. The film tracks the experiences of community members in the Intag Valley in Ecuador who were directly impacted by a potential mining project, a dispute that erupted as a result of the project, and the eventual arbitration proceedings in which the Canadian mining company sued the Ecuadorian government under the Canada-Ecuador bilateral investment treaty.

 “A powerful and moving film”
  • David R. Boyd, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment

“Essential viewing”
  • Anil Yilmaz Vastardis and Tara Van Ho, Essex Business and Human Rights Project.

We are honoured to have Dr. Malcolm Rogge introduce the film, setting the stage for an engaging discussion. Following the screening, a moderated exchange with an invited discussant (TBA) and an interactive Q&A session will provide an opportunity to reflect on the film’s themes and implications.

Dr. Malcolm Rogge has practiced for over 20 years at the intersection of human rights and business—as a human rights activist, academic, lawyer, and documentary filmmaker. He served as Teaching Fellow at Harvard University for graduate level courses in Global Governance (with John G. Ruggie), Business & Human Rights (with John G. Ruggie), and Corporate Responsibility (with Jane Nelson and John G. Ruggie). As a Clark Byse Fellow at Harvard Law School, Dr Rogge designed and led a research-based workshop series in 2018 on Business & Human Rights: Bridging the Gap. He is a member of the Global Business and Human Rights Scholars Association and the Business and Human Rights Teaching Network. For six years, Dr Rogge served as Academic Delegate at the United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights for the Harvard Human Rights Program. From 2016-2019, Dr Rogge taught Business & Human Rights at the Jindal Global University & Harvard School of Public Health Summer School on Human Rights and Development in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
